Students union for the ongoing academic session would be restored in Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in the last week of October. The university is likely to issue a notification in this regard in second week of next month.
A group of students leaders had early this week sat on dharna on campus demanding restoration of the student union. Following this, the university has decided to restore the union provided the students maintain a peaceful atmosphere in the university campus.
University has given a notice to the agitating students about next student union elections in October, said Zeeshan Ahmad,AMU spokesperson.
The previous students union was elected in January after a 78-day-long agitation by students demanding restoration of the union.
But the student body was dissolved by the university on May 31 stating that its term got over with end of academic session on the same date. However, student leaders alleged the dissolution was done to find fault with the students for the iolence that occurred on campus in April.
Sources said the students staged dharna to mount pressure on the administration to hold early election because an inquiry report is awaited from AMU disciplinary committee probing the involvement of students in April violence.
University could debar guilty students from contesting elections. So the students want the university to conduct election before submission of inquiry report, said a university official.
Vice-president of the previous student union,Syed Umar Ahmad Qadri, said the students wanted to hold elections before the Sir Syed Day on October 17. If union is formed after October 17,the office bearers of the students body will miss the opportunity to share stage with the chief guest at the event, he said.
