* Low turnout of students
* Principals seek extension of deadline
Orders of the Punjab School Education Board,Mohali,to admit students in Class IX,X,XI and XII without late fee up to April 10 and April 15 (after a school head grants permission under special circumstances) has kept schools and students on their toes.
Those seeking admission in Class XI are presently busy in their board practical exams owing to which the turnout has been very low.
Another reason for the poor response is that many students are not aware about the admission process,which inadvertently started earlier than previous years. Usually,the admission process starts only after the Class X results are out.
Interestingly,the schools are also in a fix as they are unsure about conducting the practical exams and admissions simultaneously.
According to Pavittar Pal Kaur,Director Academics,Punjab School Education Board,Mohali,The admissions to Class IX and XI should be provisional. In case a student fails in Class VIII or X,his admission fee should be adjusted.
Shashi Sharma,principal of Everest Model Senior Secondary School,Moti Nagar,said,The students who appeared in Class X exam this year are still busy with their practical exams. The mechanical drawing exam was held today while that of agriculture,home science and physical education are yet to be held. Thursday was the last day for admitting students after getting special permission.
The principal of another school said,We cater to students of rural areas and it has become an uphill task for us to make all eligible candidates aware about the ongoing admission. We have more than 150 seats and could admit only 10 students in Class XI. The board should not have taken this hasty decision. Schools and collegiate schools should be allowed to admit students at least one week after the declaration of results.
Meanwhile,Rajinder Sharma,president of the Association of PSEB Affiliated Schools,said,We are going to meet the Education Secretary in this regard and will demand extension of the admission schedule.
