If everything goes as planned by the government, commuters who avail of the bus pass facility will have to shell out six times more.
Arun Kumar, member of a students union who held a meeting with transport department officials, said,We have been informed that a pass which cost Rs 180 for three months would be hiked to Rs 1,080 for a quarter. It will not be possible for many students to travel by bus.
According to information, in order to benefit private players, the benefit of 80 per cent of the bus pass price will go to the private bus company and the remaining will be given to the state government. A large number of private buses in the state are owned by SAD leaders, said sources.
The student union members said that if the hike is implemented, they would stage protests and will bring the state to a halt.
Kumar said,Politicians are filling their coffers at the cost of development of the state. The Punjab Roadways buses do not have routes to many villages and hence students have to depend upon the private buses who often harass students. The bus passes issued by the government are accepted only in Punjab Roadways buses. A few police cases have also been registered in Moga against students where Jhujhar and Orbit transport services operate.
