Apart from catching flights from the worlds third largest airport terminal T3 at the IGI Airport, fliers will also be in for a visual treat. Two large wall murals and a sculpture are integral part of the terminal premises to add to the visual experience.
Delhi-based artist Paresh Maitys recently completed 800-feet long oil on canvas, titled The Indian Odyssey, will be spread across the walls of the international and domestic arrivals baggage counters. This is perhaps one of the largest contemporary works in the world, says Maity.
The mural comprises representations of Indian people, places and monuments in a mixture of figurative and visual representations. The idea was to have passengers interact with the mural and make associations with what they see, depending on the place they are coming from, adds Maity, who started working on the project six months back.
The other work, which was commissioned by GMR,is a 62-feet long mural titled Celebration, depicting the music, culture, dances and festivities across India. This has been placed at the international arrivals junction area.
An earlier installation of 24 dance mudras was recently across the international and domestic arrivals area.
The idea behind the visual positioning of the T3 is to convey a sense of India to the traveller. Since the central theme of the visual space within T3 is Experience India we have given artists a free hand at making their own interpretations. It is the same idea said in different voices, Amit Gupta, director of design at Incubis, which was contracted for the visual elements within T3.
A few metres away,Delhi-based artist-sculptor Satish Guptas four-metre high Surya sculpture, made in copper with gold-plated parts, will greet passengers at the pier of the international departure area. The sculpture depicts Surya, and symbolises the strength and power of India. I thought this would be the most appropriate work for this space as it is confluence of people from different backgrounds, says Gupta, who began working on the installation a year ago.
