There has been a lot of focus on the fitness and form of Yuvraj Singh, ever since he was dropped from the Asia Cup squad after he was perceived to be overweight. But neglecting Yuvraj for the tournament last month also had a lot to do with him losing the edge while fielding.
Yuvraj has looked a tad slow at times but what has heightened talks about him being sluggish is that he no longer manned the point region. Those acrobatic dives, which made him the best fielder in the side, werent on show when he stood at mid-off,mid-on or at the boundary.
On Tuesday,Yuvraj made the most of his recall into the national side with a statement,by fielding at point. It used to be a fielding position he had once made his own. Following the loss of his place in the Test batting order to Suresh Raina,Yuvraj tried his best to reclaim what was once his.
Fielding square of the wicket on the off-side,Yuvraj managed to earn a few brownie points, displaying glimpses that once made him one of the safest in that position. He threw himself around and saved a couple of certain boundaries, but there was also an embarrassing misfield.
Raina,Ravindra Jadeja,Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have all taken turns to field in the point region since Yuvraj vacated that spot, the prime location for a fielder willing to back his instincts and reflexes.
It is largely because of the demands of fielding at point, which includes diving and jumping acrobatically, which can also put a lot of stress on the knees, that Yuvraj hasnt been spotted at his specialised position for a long time.
But wearing his knee brace,Yuvraj did his best to put the past behind him, showcasing a rather agile side of him. Under fire for his lack of fitness,Yuvraj Singh tried making a point, quite literally.
